Year Three

 

Year 3 is the first year group in Key Stage 2. This means that children are expected to become more independent in their learning.

 

Throughout the year we study a variety of topics.

 

The autumn term is based around the topic of ‘the Victorians’. The children visit Abbey House Museum in Kirkstall and compare and contrast their lives with those of Victorian children. We also study a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts in literacy, some of which are linked to our Victorians topic.

 

During the autumn term our topic is ‘the Romans’. The children learn how to research historical events using a number of resources including library books and the internet. The children are challenged to evaluate the information that they find and discuss its reliability. We visit a reconstruction of a Roman Fort in York and are conscripted into the Roman Legion for the day!

 

Throughout the summer term we consider a variety of environmental issues that affect us in the local area and people throughout the world. We learn how to write letters for various purposes, including letters to persuade manufacturers and shops to consider the amount of unnecessary packaging they use in their products. We also learn about helping plants grow well and have the opportunity to carry out some investigative work into the factors that will affect the growth of plants.

 

In Year Three I work with Mrs Edgington who is a fantastic Teaching Assistant, together we aim to ensure that all of our children enjoy their learning and reach their full potential!
